With mentions back to 1764, Chateau Clos Rene is of ancient origin. Now owned by Jean Marie Garde, this chateau has belonged to the same family for several generations. Located on the western slope of the Pomerol plateau, this vineyard has an area of 15 hectares. With an average age of 35 years, the solid is composed of ancient gravel and sand from the Quaternary period resting on a subsoil of iron grime. The wine is aged for 18 months in oak barrels, 30% of which are renewed each year. The stave wood, used to make the barrels, comes from Allier and undergoes medium heating. The fining is always made with fresh egg whites.
Tasting Notes:
“They love to deliver classically-styled wines from this estate, and this is very clearly a tannic-heavy, big shouldered old school Pomerol with real heart and charm. Expect plenty of blackberry, black cherry and smoked earth, edging towards austere, should be ready to go in three or four years.” Score: 91 - Jane Anson, JaneAnson.com, December 2022
Serving Suggestions:
Pairs well with beef, lamb, game and poultry dishes.
